When I used to think of herbal tea, it typically brought about visions of pipping hot cups of ginger chai, chamomile, or lavender tea. Cozy sips with comforting flavor. I’ve been a tea drinker pretty much my entire life and after years of learning and sipping, I’ve come to appreciate all types of tea, from true teas such as green and white tea along with all the herbal tea varieties. Of which, I don’t think there is a limit! The one steady of tea in my opinion is that making fresh herbal tea in my kitchen brings about the best flavor. I can fully customize the tea to my taste. Adding a drizzle of honey, an extra sprig of mint, and even experimenting with different combinations.

So today I’m excited to share this almost too simple black pepper tea recipe. It is made by gently crushing whole peppercorns and gently infusing them with hot water. This tea can be enjoyed hot or iced and sweetened with a drizzle of honey.

STEP FOUR: Sweeten Finally, stir in honey to your liking. This step is entirely optional, but a little sweetness can nicely balance the spiciness of the pepper. Then sit back, wrap your hands around the warm mug, and savor the cozy, spicy flavors of your homemade black pepper tea.

Recipe Notes

  • Pepper Intensity: Feel free to adjust the amount of black pepper used based on your preference. Start with a teaspoon and if you enjoy the kick, consider adding a little more next time.
  • Variations: Experiment by adding other herbs or spices, such as a cinnamon stick, ginger slices, or a cardamom pod, during the steeping process to introduce new flavors to your tea.
  • Serving Suggestions: Black pepper tea can be a great accompaniment to a hearty breakfast or a soothing nighttime beverage. Consider pairing it with a slice of lemon or orange to add a fresh, citrusy twist.
  • Storage Tips: While fresh is best, you can also make this tea in larger batches and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. Reheat gently on the stove or enjoy cold for a refreshing twist.
  • Caffeine-Free: This tea is naturally caffeine-free, making it a perfect choice for those looking to reduce their caffeine intake or for a soothing evening drink that won’t disrupt sleep patterns.

Storage

Storing your homemade black pepper tea is a breeze, ensuring you can enjoy its spicy, comforting warmth any time you like. After cooling down, pour any leftover tea into a glass jar or bottle with a secure lid and stash it in the refrigerator. This way, your black pepper tea will stay fresh and tasty for up to 2 days. Whenever you’re in the mood for a spicy sip, simply reheat your tea gently on the stove or zap it in the microwave for a quick warm-up. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try it cold for a brisk and refreshing twist on your new favorite beverage!
