This warm sweet and spicy ginger chai tea is made with fresh ginger root, chai tea bags, sugar, and milk. Put the kettle on and let’s enjoy a cup!

Nothing says fall to me like a cup of spiced tea. Although I enjoy tea year-round, I especially like a bold blend with spices to kick off the fall season. Chai is one of my favorite teas and this ginger chai recipe variation is just oh-so good! It is easy enough to make one cup for yourself but if you are having friends, bring out the teapot and enjoy this delicious tea and amazing aroma around the table.
What is Ginger Chai Tea?
Ginger chai is similar to ginger milk tea but it also includes all the warm chai spices with fresh ginger as the star ingredient! It is sweet and spicy and typically served warm. (Although if iced chai is your jam, don’t hesitate to pour over ice!) Ginger chai is made with only 4 ingredients and couldn’t be more simple to make. I find that it is the perfect morning cup. Easy to make, quick, and the pick me up I need to get through my day!
Ginger Chai or Masala Chai
Chai means tea. This way of preparing tea can also be called masala chai. It is the traditional way of preparing tea in India which includes black tea, milk, and a mixture of spices including cardamom, peppercorn, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, nutmeg, star anise, cloves, and fennel.
However, my recipe for ginger chai tea is made with only 4 ingredients: chai tea bags, fresh ginger root, milk, and sweetener.
- Fresh Ginger Root – not only does fresh ginger taste delicious, add a bit of spice, but also carries many health benefits. (See below)
- Chai Tea Bags- l enjoy all the spices included in a simple chai tea bag. I use Stash Chai Tea and it’s perfection!
- Milk – whole milk is traditionally used but you can also use whatever you have on hand. (See variations for more milk options)
- Sweetener – Traditionally ginger chai tea uses white sugar. It is a common sweetener and dissolves easily into the hot mixture. (See variations for more sweetener options.)

Tips and Variations Of Ginger Chai
- Do not over boil the milk as it can easily burn.
- Over-steeping can cause the tea to taste bitter and under-steeping makes weak tea. I like to use a digital kitchen timer to keep my steeping time the perfect consistent length.
- Don’t have fresh ginger? No problem, you can substitute with 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger. You might end up with a small ginger powder film over your tea but it will still taste wonderful.
- Lactose intolerant or have a dairy allergy? You can make this recipe vegan by substituting whole milk with almost any alternative. My favorites include oat milk, almond milk, (which gives it an extra nutty flavor), and coconut milk.
- Rather use loose leaf tea? You can substitute each tea bag with 1 1/2 teaspoons of unflavored black tea.
- Substitute with your favorite sweetener! I enjoy both raw organic honey or liquid stevia for a sugar-free ginger chai. Brown sugar can also be used and gives an extra rich flavor.
- Add a splash of vanilla for a vanilla chai.
