Why Rooibos?

Rooibos (pronounced ROY-boss) is a naturally caffeine-free herbal tea, loved for its smooth, earthy flavor and gentle sweetness. It’s full of antioxidants, making it an excellent choice if you’re looking for a relaxing, good-for-you beverage. Try out this easy homemade cold brew rooibos tea recipe! (source)

What Makes Cold Brew Rooibos Tea So Special?

  • Caffeine-Free: Perfect for anyone trying to cut down on caffeine.
  • No Stovetop Needed: Great for hot days (or dorm rooms).
  • Super Easy: Toss everything in a jar and forget about it until morning.
  • Smooth Taste: Cold brewing brings out rooibos’s sweet, mellow flavor without a hint of bitterness.

What You’ll Need: Ingredients for Cold Brew Rooibos Tea Recipe

rooibos tea in container and water in pitcher on countertop
  • 1/4 cup loose leaf rooibos tea (or 4 teaspoons, if you like it lighter)
  • 1 quart (4 cups) cold, filtered water
  • A large mason jar or pitcher
  • Fine mesh strainer or tea filter
  • Optional add-ins:
    • Lemon or orange slices
    • Fresh mint leaves
    • A splash of honey or maple syrup

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Easy Cold Brew Rooibos Tea Recipe

1. Measure Your Tea

Add 4 teaspoons (or up to 1/4 cup for stronger tea) of loose rooibos tea to your mason jar or pitcher. If using tea bags, about 4-6 will do the trick.

2. Add Cold Water

Pour in 4 cups of cold, filtered water. The better your water, the better your brew!

3. Stir & Chill

Give it a quick stir to get those leaves moving. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours (overnight is best). Rooibos is forgiving, so a little longer is totally fine.

4. Strain & Serve

Strain the tea into a new pitcher using a fine mesh strainer. Discard the leaves (or compost them!).

5. Add Your Twist

Try it as is, or add a few slices of lemon, a sprig of mint, or a drizzle of honey for a little extra flavor.

6. Enjoy!

Pour cold brew rooibos over ice and sip away. It’s refreshing, a gentle pick-me-up, and pretty much perfection in a glass.

Pro Tips & Tricks

  • You can double or triple this recipe for parties.
  • Rooibos pairs well with berries, ginger, and even vanilla.
  • Leftover tea can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. (However, if it develops a strange smell or changes color, discard and make a new batch!)
