Iced London Fog Drink

Since the temperature has reached the high 90s this week, I thought it was the perfect time to make an iced London fog. Earl grey has been and always will be my favorite tea, and I love that I can use it in so many different tea recipes. The flavors of bergamot and citrus never get old. London Fog drinks are a popular tea latte to purchase from coffee and tea shops, but they are also incredibly easy to make with only a few staple ingredients and are extremely cost-effective. I also love that it is simple to customize and swap out ingredients to accommodate almost any diet. Earl grey contains a bit of caffeine as well so it is perfect for a morning cup or an afternoon pick-me-up!

What is an Iced London Fog Tea Latte?

A traditional London Fog Drink includes Earl Grey Tea, milk, and a dash of vanilla. There are many different approaches to this drink. You can make it iced or hot, and often a bit of lavender is included. This drink is bright and fresh bringing the best flavors together for a delicious tea.

Ingredients

  • Earl Grey Tea – You can use tea bags or loose leaves. If using tea bags, I recommend using high-quality tea for the best flavor.
  • Vanilla – A real vanilla extract is perfect for this recipe. However, if you have vanilla bean available you can use that also.
  • Sugar – Regular granulated sugar is perfect for this recipe as it will have plenty of time to fully dissolve.
  • Milk – A rich milk is perfect for this recipe. You can also use half and half, cream, or plant-based milk. Foam milk right before using.
  • Water – Use filtered or spring water for the best-tasting tea.
  • Ice – Just a handful of ice is needed for this refreshing drink!

How to Make An Iced London Fog (Ice Earl Grey Tea)

This tea starts with adding water, sugar, and vanilla to a saucepan. Bring it to a boil stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves. Add tea and steep for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, froth your milk and add ice to your serving cup. Once the tea has cooled off, pour over ice and top with milk. Now it is time to enjoy! Feel free to add a straw!

How to Froth Milk

There is an art to frothing milk and I still would not say I have mastered it yet. However, here are a few tips to get that light, airy, foamy milk to top your tea.

foaming milk

Pour milk into the designated frothing pitcher. Put milk foamer into milk and start to froth. Slowly and gently left up the foamer to allow more and more air into the milk. Foam until the milk has at least doubled in size.

Kitchen Tools

  • Saucepan with Lid
  • Milk Foamer

Ingredients

  • Earl Grey Tea
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Milk
  • Water
  • Ice

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Add water, sugar, and vanilla to a saucepan and bring to a boil stirring occasionally to make sure the sugar fully dissolves.
  2. Turn off the heat and add tea.
  3. Steep for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove tea bags or strain out tea.
  5. Allow the tea mixture to cool completely.
  6. Foam Milk if desired.
  7. Pour over ice and top with foamy milk.
  8. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

  • I love a good tea with bold flavors. In this recipe, I use double the amount of tea to ensure strong flavors. If you are unsure or new to a London fog, feel free to use half the amount of tea.
  • Make it sugar-free by substituting it with honey, stevia, maple syrup, or coconut sugar. (Note that whatever sugar you chose will alter the end flavor.
  • Make it dairy-free by using plant-based milk. My favorite is unsweetened almond milk.
  • Want to avoid the extra heat of the stovetop? Try cold-brewing your tea first! Add water, tea, sweetener, and vanilla to a refrigerated safe jar with a lid and refrigerate for 12-24 hours.

Storage

While it is highly unlikely that you will have leftovers, this tea actually stores extremely well. Cover and pop into the refrigerator and enjoy the next day!

How Much Caffeine is in a London Fog?

This drink does contain caffeine. Its base is an Earl Grey – which is a flavored true tea. The caffeine content can depend upon what black tea is in your earl grey and how your tea is made. In general, this recipe can contain anywhere from 90-to 120 mg of caffeine!
