Cold Brew Matcha
Cold Brewing is a method of preparing tea with cold water instead of hot water. Typically one would add tea leaves to cold water and allow the mixture to steep cold for several hours to extract the flavor from the tea. Then strain out the tea solids and enjoy.
In this recipe for matcha green tea cold brew, however, there is no need for a long steeping time. Since we will be using matcha, which doesn’t need to steep, our tea will be ready in less than a minute.
Cold-brewed matcha is so smooth and delicious! I’m sure you are going to love it! You can even turn it into a matcha latte cold brew.
Why is Cold Brewing Matcha Tea Best?
Cold-brew matcha can also be called matcha iced tea. Cold-brew matcha is made with cool water and matcha green tea powder. It is shaken together (I use my handy blender bottle) and poured over ice. (try using these matcha ice cubes) In my opinion, the best way to make matcha is cold.
Green tea has a high concentration of tannins, a chemical compound in tea that can give the tea a slightly bitter taste. Ways to lower the number of tannins extracted from tea is by using cold water to steep (such as cold brewing!) and steeping for a shorter amount of time. You will notice most people recommend brewing green teas for only 3 minutes! This is to keep it from becoming too bitter to drink!
You will also notice that cold-brewed matcha has a much smoother and less bitter aftertaste than hot matcha.

What is Matcha?
Matcha comes from the true tea plant, camellia sinensis. It also contains caffeine. True matcha is grown in Japan where its origin is a ceremonial beverage drunk by royalty and Buddhist monks.
Matcha is grown differently from other tea. Its growers will create shade over the leaves for the last two weeks before harvest. This short time causes the leaves to produce extra amino acids and chlorophyll which gives their leaves an extra bright color.
The tea leaves are steamed and baked before being ground into a very fine powder.
In matcha, the entire leaf is consumed which results in an extra nutrient-rich tea.
It is also important to note for this reason to source a high-quality tea as the entire leaf is enjoyed.
Matcha Caffeine Amount
Matcha tea contains caffeine as all true teas do! Since the whole leaf is ingested, matcha has a bit more caffeine than most teas at around 70mg per cup.
