What is Brown Sugar Milk Tea?

Milk tea is simply tea and milk. If you traveled around the world you would find some amazing milk tea recipes all made with their own special ingredients.

The popular bubble milk tea originated in Taiwan and most contain tapioca pearls. (you can find it served at places such as Kung Fu Tea, or Bubble Tea) Popular in India is chai tea, also a milk tea, and is made with spices such as cinnamon and ginger. Another popular milk tea is found in Japan called royal milk tea and can be ordered from the menu in many cafes there.

This milk tea recipe is rich, decadent, and made with brown sugar and oat milk. While using full-fat milk or cream is more popular and does make a wonderful tea, I wanted to see what plant-based milk would taste like. I know many of us (myself included) prefer to avoid dairy. This brown sugar tea recipe doesn’t disappoint and is the perfect cup of dairy-free milk tea.

What is in Brown Sugar Milk Tea

  • Black Tea – any strong black tea will work in this recipe. You can choose any high-quality tea in either tea bags or loose leaves. If using loose leaves you will need a tea infuser or tea strainer to filter out the tea leaves after steeping the tea. This recipe is delicious with English Breakfast Tea, Irish Breakfast Tea, Earl Grey Tea, or Lady Grey Tea.
  • Milk – many people enjoy full-fat milk or even half & half to make this a rich decadent tea beverage. I use oat milk for a plant-based milk that is still rich and adds amazing flavor to this tea. You can find more milk variations down below for more milk options.
  • Brown Sugar – when I first started adding brown sugar to my tea for sweetener I fell in love with its rich molasses undertones. Brown sugar also gives your tea a slight caramel flavor as well. I can’t recommend it enough. For this recipe, I choose a dark brown sugar.
  • Water

Tips for the Best Tea Flavor

  • Use freshly drawn (freshly poured) water. Fresh water contains more oxygen and plays an important roll in the flavor of your tea.
  • Use filtered water. Good tasting water makes good tasting tea!
  • Be sure to steep your tea the full amount. A strongly brewed tea is essential in this recipe.
  • Rinse your teacup with warm water to keep the temperature consistent when pouring in tea.
  • For an extra rich tea drink, top with a dollop of whipped cream.

Milk tea really is best when enjoyed right after being freshly made.  If you do have leftover tea you can cover and refrigerate it overnight. When you are ready to enjoy it again, give the tea a stir before consuming it.

Questions:

Does Milk Tea have Caffeine?

Yes, this recipe for milk tea contains black tea which has caffeine. The exact amount of caffeine can vary depending upon what type of tea, and how long the tea has been steeped.

Is Brown Sugar Milk Tea Good?

In my opinion, yes, brown sugar milk tea is good! If you like tea with milk and sugar you will most likely LOVE this tea!

Variations

In this recipe I use oat-milk. I find that it is rich and has a very similar taste and density to regular milk. However, you can substitute with your favorite milk.

Milk Variations:

  • Oat milk (I personally use oat milk and it is my favorite plant based milk. It also tastes the most like traditional dairy milk.)
  • Almond Milk
  • Soy Milk
  • Cashew Milk
  • Coconut Milk

You can also use other sweeteners as well to make this milk tea your own. Try:

  • Date Syrup
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Honey
