What is Apple Tea?

Apple tea is simple yet delicious! Made with the fresh fruit of apples, it has a delightfully crisp, refreshing, and mellow taste. In many ways, it reminds me of apple cider. I especially love this tea during the early fall months when the flavor profile mingles with the changes of the season for a comforting and cozy drink.

History

Although there are many different types of tea, apple tea, Turkish apple tea, and apple cinnamon tea are all classics that have been enjoyed for centuries. These types of tea can be made by simply combining apples (fresh or dried) and tea or with additional spices like cinnamon and star anise.

Apple tea is thought to have originated in Turkey, where apples and cinnamon are in abundance. This tea is now a popular tea and is often enjoyed during the colder months.

Whether you enjoy drinking apple cinnamon tea for its flavor or its health benefits, there’s no doubt that this is one type of tea that’s here to stay.

Other Types of Apple Tea

Authentic Turkish apple tea is a warm and flavorful beverage enjoyed by many. This type of tea is made with black tea, spices like cinnamon, and dried apples. It is the addition of apples that gives the tea a unique sweetness and flavor that is loved by many. This tea is perfect for enjoying any time of day, served hot or cold, with meals, or as a dessert tea.

Apple cinnamon tea is one of my favorite seasonal teas. This type of tea combines the sweetness of apples with the warmth of cinnamon to create a delightful flavor that is sure to please. The fragrance of this tea is just as amazing as the flavor, with hints of apple and spice that will fill your home with warm scents and leave you feeling cozy and content.

What does Apple Tea Taste Like?

Apple tea has a light and delicate sweetness, with a mild apple tartness combined with a crisp and refreshing taste that is perfect for any time of day. This type of tea is made with real apples, so you can expect a natural authentic and pleasant apple flavor in every sip.

What are the aromatic qualities of Apple tea?

This type of tea is made with real apples so that you can expect a natural pleasant apple scent. I find the fragrance comforting and inviting, making it the perfect choice for fall afternoons or evenings. Additionally, adding different spices, herbs, and fruit will transform even more.

What does Apple tea look like?

Apple teas have a light color and will range from pale yellow to amber-hued. The longer you steep your tea, the darker the color might become.

Health Benefits and Risks of Apple Tea

Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, apples are an excellent choice for those looking to improve their overall health. Apples may also help boost metabolism and promote weight loss.

Additionally, apple tea with cinnamon may help provide relief from cold and flu symptoms, making it a great choice for those times when you’re feeling under the weather.

As with any changes to your health and wellness routine, it is always best to first consult with your trusted doctor or qualified medical professional.

Caffeine Content

Apples by themselves do not contain any caffeine but this recipe includes black tea which does have a bit of caffeine.

The amount of caffeine can vary depending on how the tea is prepared. For example, if you use more black tea leaves when brewing your tea, the resulting drink will have more caffeine.

For making this tea caffeine free, simply omit the black tea or substitute it with rooibos tea which is a naturally caffeine-free herbal tea that has a similar taste to black tea.

Ingredients

Apple tea is made with only 2 main ingredients.

ingredients in apple tea

Fresh Apples – I have only used red apples for making apple tea as they are sweet and juicy. I love the pink colors the peels produce when cooking. Use your favorite apples. This is a great recipe to use up some of those apples you might have come home with after apple picking.

Black Tea – Almost any black tea will be wonderful in this recipe. I even used earl grey once and loved the addition of bergamot flavor. See here for a list of black tea varieties.

Why you will Love Apple Tea

  • Fresh flavor
  • Simple to make
  • Great way to use seasonal apples

How to Make Apple Tea

Kitchen Tools

  • Saucepan
  • Masher

Ingredients

  • 1 Apple
  • 1 Teaspoon Black Tea or 1 tea bag
  • Water

Instructions

step by step instructions
  1. Start by coring and slicing the apple into large slices.
  2. Add water and apples to a saucepan and allow to simmer on low for about 10-15 minutes. The liquid in the pot will turn pink. Once the apples are cooked down use a hand masher and mash down the apple.
  3. Let mixture cool enough to handle before straining out cooked apples.
  4. Strain out apple pulp with a fine strainer. You might need to strain for a second time to remove all the pulp.
  5. Return all the strained liquid to the pot and bring to a low boil.
  6. Turn off the heat and add in tea. Allow the tea to steep for 5 minutes.
  7. Strain out the tea.
  8. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

  • Use quality, pure, filtered water for your tea.
  • Use fresh ripe sweet apples.
  • Add a bit of honey or sugar for a sweeter tea.
  • Avoid over-steeping your tea as it can cause the tea to become bitter.
  • Make it caffeine free by substituting black tea with rooibos tea.

Variations

With such a delightfully sweet and healthy tea as apple tea, there are few ways it can “go wrong,” and most of the variation comes down to individual preferences! Here are a few different ways you can make your cup of tea your own.

Teabags or Loose Leaf?

My preference is usually loose-leaf tea. However, there is often a practical time for tea bags or tea sachets! Often, the tea bag offers convenience and is easier to strain out the tea leaves.

Spices and Blends

There are a wide variety of combinations to try with your apple tea! Here are a few to try.

Cinnamon

Try adding cinnamon to create a delicious apple cinnamon tea. You can also add a bit of honey to make it sweeter.

Citrus

For a refreshing twist, add a splash of lemon juice or a squeeze of orange to your Apple Tea.

Chamomile

Make this tea a soothing herbal tea by using chamomile in place of black tea.

Dietary Options

By itself, apple tea is gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan.

Food Pairings and Seasonality of Apple tea

Apple tea is a delicate, lightly sweetened tea with a cozy apple flavor. It pairs well with baked goods and fruit, making it a perfect addition to your afternoon or evening. Try pairing it with a slice of Apple Pie or Apple Strudel for a truly delicious treat.

When to drink Apple tea

Apple Tea is a delightful way to enjoy the fall season and all the deliciousness that comes with it! This tea is perfect for any time of year, but especially when apples are in season. It pairs well with baked goods and fruit, making it a perfect addition to your day.

Storing Apple Tea

Apple Tea should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Tea leaves or bags can be kept in an airtight container to help preserve freshness. Apple tea is best enjoyed fresh, so it’s best to make only what you plan on drinking within a few days. However, it can be stored in the refrigerator for several days after preparation.
