It is hard to choose a favorite, with all the amazing teas in the world, but if I had to, Earl Grey would win every time. Not only do I have the best memories of drinking this tea with my grandma, but the flavor of earl grey is deep, complex, and never gets old. It can be enjoyed as a hot cup with nothing added, iced, or if you’re in the mood for something more, this earl grey milk tea.
What Is Earl Grey Tea?
A widely popular tea, it is commonly thought that Earl Grey was strictly a British tea but it actually has its roots in China. I have read several different versions of how it got its name and how it come to the west, but in the end, I am glad it did.
Earl Grey tea is a black tea flavored with bergamot. It is considered a flavored tea, and the base can vary between several black teas from Assam, Darjeeling, and Keemun or be a blend of any of them.
It is fun to try different Earl Greys to see which one you like best. Twinnings is a classic brand that produces high-quality tea.
Earl Grey Tea does have caffeine as its base is a true black tea. All black teas contain caffeine.
What is Earl Grey Milk Tea?
While adding milk to earl grey tea is fairly common, this Earl Grey milk tea is a sweet and creamy drink made with earl grey tea, rich foamy milk, sweetener, and a dash of vanilla. I love to make this warm and comforting tea that is full of flavor and richness.
Ingredients
- Earl Grey Tea – Chose your favorite! Loose-leaf tea or tea bags are great in this recipe.
- Milk – I use full-fat oat milk for a rich and creamy tea.
- Sugar – See a list of sugar variations below, but I suggest brown sugar for a caramelly note.
- Vanilla – just a dash, but also optional.
- Water – Use fresh filtered water for the best-tasting tea!

- Earl Grey is a black tea. If using an electric kettle be sure to heat your water to 212°F as that is the optimal water temperature for black tea.
- Steep tea covered and for a full 5 minutes for the best taste. Less time will result in a weaker tea, and steeping too much longer will risk a bitter tea.
- If you like strong tea, add another tea bag or more tea leaves. This will give a strong tea without bitterness.
- Interested in trying bubble tea? You can use this recipe to make an amazing earl grey bubble tea! Just cook 1/4 cup of boba in hot water, strain, mix with brown sugar simple syrup and add to your drink. Boba tea is best when served in a tall glass with a boba straw instead of a traditional tea cup.
