Why You Will Love Chocolate Boba Tea

  • Sweet and Indulgent
  • Satisfies those Chocolate Cravings
  • Super Simple to Make
  • Easily Customizable
  • Amazing Texture

Taste

  • Perfectly Chocolatey
  • Sweet
  • Great Texture
  • Smooth

Ingredients

chocolate milk tea topped with cream and dusted with cocoa powder
  • Cocoa Powder – Use an unsweetened cocoa powder as you can add your own sweetener.
  • Milk – Try traditional whole milk, or substitute with your favorite plant-based milk. I personally use unsweetened almond milk for this recipe.
  • Vanilla – Use a real vanilla extract over imitation.
  • Black Tea – I love a good English Breakfast Tea or Irish Breakfast, but you can use whatever you have on hand! Tea bags also work just fine in this recipe.
  • Sugar – Regular granulated sugar is fine for this recipe. It will fully dissolve with the milk and cocoa powder making this tea smooth and sweet.
  • Boba – Who doesn’t love boba balls? While adding boba or tapioca pearls is optional, I recommend it as it takes this tea to the next level!

How to Cook Boba Balls (Tapioca Pearls)

I would suggest using the recipe given with your boba. If you don’t have that option or if the recipe is a fail, (I have heard that sometimes the recipe is not correct although this has never been my experience.)

The general way to cook boba is to bring 5 cups of water to a boil on the stovetop. Add in boba (gently give your pot a stir) and cook until the pearls raise to the top. Reduce the heat to medium or low and allow the boba to cook for about 15 minutes. You can adjust the cooking time to prepare to your preference. (Feel free to do a taste test) Strain out boba and rinse. Add to your serving cup.

Tips for Cooking Perfect Boba

  • Make fresh, ideally right before serving.
  • Cook to your desired chewiness. Feel free to do a taste!
  • Be sure to not overcook.
  • Use instant boba, dried boba, or make your own!
  • Making your own boba might seem overwhelming, but it is incredibly simple and gratifying.
  • Gently rise boba after cooking. Optional, top with a bit of liquid sugar.

How to Make Chocolate Milk Tea (Chocolate Bubble Tea)

Kitchen Tools

  • Saucepan
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Strainer
  • Reusable Boba Straws

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Milk
  • 1 Teaspoon Cocoa Powder
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 Heaping Teaspoon Black Tea
  • 1/4 Cup Boba + Water for cooking

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Cook boba according to package instructions.
  2. Add milk to saucepan over low heat. Allow the milk to warm up. (This is extremely important! Warming the milk first helps to keep the cocoa from clumping.) Stir constantly to avoid overheating and letting the milk burn.
  3. Whisk in cocoa powder, vanilla, and sugar.
  4. Bring to a low boil.
  5. Turn off the heat, add in tea, and cover.
  6. Steep for 5 minutes.
  7. Strain out tea.
  8. Scoop boba in the bottom of the cup. Top with 1 Tablespoon of simple syrup if desired.
  9. Add a handful of ice.
  10. Pour tea over the top of the boba.
  11. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with cocoa powder. (optional)
  12. Enjoy!

Recipe Variations and  Dietary Considerations

  • Use any black tea you have on hand.
  • Make it dairy-free and vegan by substituting sugar with your favorite milk. Only use unsweetened milk as this recipe calls for its own sweetener.
  • Make it sugar-free by substituting sugar with honey, stevia, maple syrup, or coconut sugar.
  • Top with whipped cream (or coconut whipped cream for dairy-free and vegan options) and dust with cocoa powder.
  • Enjoy with a boba straw!
  • Enjoy with or without ice.
