  • Dried Whole Cloves: I always start with whole cloves because they pack all the flavor and aromatic goodness I’m after in my clove tea.
  • Water: Just the right amount for a single serving. If I’m making tea for friends, I multiply the water by the number of cups I need.
  • Honey: This is my go-to sweetener for adding a touch of sweetness that complements the spicy clove flavor perfectly. Sometimes, I adjust the amount of honey based on my mood or preference that day.

How to Make Clove Tea

Start by adding whole cloves to a mortar and pestle and lightly crush cloves.

Add cloves  and water to a small pot and bring to a boil

Once the water has reached a boil, reduce the heat to low and allow the tea to simmer for about 8 minutes. (If you prefer your tea stronger, leave it on the heat for an extra minute or two.)

Use a strainer to pour your clove tea into your mug.

Variations

  • Clove Tea with Lemon: Add some lemon juice to your clove tea for a citrusy kick. Simply squeeze half a lemon into your mug before adding the honey.
  • Clove Tea with Cinnamon: If you love cinnamon, add a stick to the water while it’s boiling and let it simmer for an extra minute or two. The result is a delightful blend of spices.
  • Iced Clove Tea: Let your tea cool down and pour it over ice for a refreshing iced version of clove tea. You can also add some lemon slices or mint leaves for an extra twist.

Recipe Notes

  • Experiment with Sweeteners: While I adore honey for its natural sweetness, feel free to experiment with other sweeteners. Maple syrup or stevia can be fantastic alternatives, especially if you’re watching your sugar intake.
  • Add a Cinnamon Stick: For those days when you crave an extra layer of warmth, add a cinnamon stick while your tea steeps can infuse it with a comforting, earthy sweetness. It pairs wonderfully with the cloves.
  • Citrus Twist: I sometimes like to add a slice of orange or lemon to my clove tea. The citrus adds a refreshing zing that brightens up the whole cup, making it a vibrant choice, especially during the winter months.
  • Adjust Clove Quantity: Depending on how strong you like your tea, feel free to adjust the number of cloves used. Starting with a few and adding more to taste is a good strategy to find your perfect balance.
  • Play with Herbs: Adding herbs like mint or lemongrass can introduce an interesting, complex flavor profile to your clove tea. It’s a great way to make each cup a new experience.
  • Health Boost: For an extra health kick, I sometimes add a slice of fresh ginger or a pinch of turmeric. These are not only flavorful but are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefits of Clove Tea

Besides being incredibly tasty and a cozy companion on chilly days, clove tea comes with a bunch of health perks that make me love it even more! First off, clove tea is known for its antioxidant properties, which is awesome for fighting off free radicals. While I’m all in for the natural benefits of clove tea, it’s super important to consult with your doctor before making it a regular part of your health routine, especially if you have existing health conditions or are on medication. Always better to be safe and enjoy your clove tea without any worries!
