How to Make an Oat Milk Chai Latte From Scratch

Crush Spices – Add whole dried spices to a mortar and pestle and gently crush them to make it easier to release their flavors.

Make Chai – Pour the spices into a small pot and top with water and fresh ginger slices. Set the kitchen timer for 10 minutes. Bring to a boil and then lower to a simmer and cover the pot for the remaining time.

Steep Tea – Turn off the heat and add in tea. (Use tea bags or loose-leaf tea) Cover the pot with a lid and allow the tea to steep for 5-7 minutes.

Strain – Strain out tea and spices and stir in coconut sugar until fully incorporated.

Warm Milk – Warm and froth oat milk. I typically heat my milk on the stovetop and use a handheld wand to froth milk. To perfectly foam milk, it should be heated to 150° F. You can use a kitchen thermometer to watch the temp. (PRO TIP: Milk with scorch quickly so it is best to watch it constantly. It heats quickly! ) You can also use an electric milk steamer if you have one.

How to Make a Chai Latte with Oat Milk Using Tea Bags

Looking for an alternative to making your own spice blend?

  1. Using the same process methods as above, instead of making your own spice blend, add 2 tea bags (or 3 for an extra strong spicy tea!) to a heat-safe container and pour water over the tea.
  2. Cover and steep for 5-7 minutes.
  3. After the tea has steeped, remove the tea bags after squeezing any remaining liquid from them. (I use tea bag tongs to protect my fingers from the heat!)
  4. Stir in sweetener and milk.
  5. Enjoy

How to Froth Oat Milk for Your Chai Latte

Frothing oat milk is a simple process that yields a creamy and delicious chai latte. Here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Firstly, heat the oat milk on the stovetop in a pot or pan. You can also use an electric milk steamer if you have one.
  2. When the milk is warm, transfer it to a pitcher and use a handheld frother wand to whisk the milk in circles for about 20 seconds until it reaches the desired consistency.
  3. Finally, pour the oat milk into your chai latte. Enjoy!
