All true tea has caffeine, but black and green teas tend to have the highest caffeine content. Black teas usually have 50mg, while green teas are typically 45mg per cup. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, stick to herbal teas which generally have no caffeine. However, that rule contains one key exception: both yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) and guayusa (Ilex guayusa) varieties, with each serving containing 70-80mg of caffeine or more, respectively!
What has more Caffeine Coffee or Tea?
Trying to break a coffee addiction? Interestingly, coffee contains more caffeine than black tea. An average cup of coffee has about 100mg of caffeine (or more!), which is significantly more than black tea (~50mg) and green tea (~45mg). Coffee, yerba mate, and guayusa aren’t that far off from each other. However, just like tea, this varies depending on the brand, quality, type, and how it is prepared. Fans of tea and coffee alike will quickly offer health benefits for each; I personally enjoy the “whole package” of tea health benefits (including caffeine) over that of coffee. For me, coffee is too “buzzy” and tea offers support to digestive, cardiovascular, and cognitive health.

Ultimately, it depends on your individual needs and preferences. However, black and green teas, as well as yerba mate and guayusa are great places to start!

Unlike many beverages where it is added, caffeine occurs naturally in most teas. One of the ways it works is by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain which normally cause feelings of tiredness. This means that caffeine can help to keep you alert and awake. Caffeine may also work as a mild diuretic which means it can increase the amount of urine you produce and lead to dehydration if you consume too much caffeine.
High caffeine teas can range in caffeine content depending on serving size, brand, quality of leaves, and method of production (etc.) from less than 40mg to 80mg or more. Coffee, with the same caveats as tea, tends to hover around 100mg of caffeine per serving. Energy drinks, soda, pop, or cola can be very high in caffeine (and also include a cocktail of add-ins and could be high in sugar – read the label, and think twice about those options!).
As a general rule of thumb, avoid consuming more than 400mg of caffeine each day; it is always best to consult with your doctor before making changes to your regiment.

Much of this depends on the factors listed above. Both black and green tea come from the same plant! In general, black and green tea can fluctuate between first and second place depending on the brand, quality, production, and part of the tea plant Camellia sinensis used. Herbal teas do not have caffeine, with the distinct exceptions of yerba mate and guayusa, which we will discuss, below.
Matcha green tea is a type of green tea that is made from powdered leaves from the Camellia sinensis. Matcha is an especially popular drink in Japan and is known for its high caffeine content. Like most green teas, it is also rich in antioxidants and other nutrients, which makes it a healthy choice for boosting your day. Caffeine content is usually around 40-45mg per cup, but that could be higher depending on the form, quality, and brewing time (For example, more scoops of matcha means more caffeine in your cup).
Which tea has the least caffeine? With one exception, herbal tea has no caffeine. Myriad herbal teas are there with equally vast and impressive health benefits promoting sleep quality and wellness. Herbal teas are one of my favorite types of tea! It might be interesting to note that herbal teas are not true teas from the tea plant, but technically labed tisanes.
However, the one impressive exception to the herbal tea caffeine-free rule is Yerba Mate and guayusa teas. Yerba mate and guayusa come from the leaves of the ilex (holly) plant. In general, yerba mate contains around 80mg of caffeine per cup, and guayusa contains around 70 mg of caffeine per cup. Start small, as both are said to have an acquired taste!
What black tea has the most caffeine, anyway? Well, Black teas such as Assam, Darjeeling, and Keemun are examples of black tea and are also made from the Camellia sinensis plant. Typically black teas are full-bodied flavor profiles with a strong caffeine kick of about 50mg or more per cup. Black teas all have unique and delicious tastes and aromatic qualities and are typically enjoyed with cream and sugar.
