I know you can purchase rose syrup at the store, but honestly, when you see how easy and economical it is to make your own, there is no turning back!

Rose Syrup Ingredients
- Rose Buds or Rose Petals – You can use either one. I used rose buds and couldn’t be happier with the results. It is very important to use food-grade rose.
- Sugar – While it doesn’t matter too much which sugar you use, I opted for regular cane sugar. This allowed the coloring from the rose to come through without any hints of molasses.
- Water – The water you use is very important. Good water in syrup is just as important as in your cup of tea. With the delicate light flavor of rose, using good water helps to enhance rather than complicate or detract.

- 1/2 Cup Rose Buds or Petals (this does not need to be packed down- just a light scoop)
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 Cup Sugar
How to Make Rose Syrup, Method
- Turn heat on low.
- Place saucepan on the stovetop.
- Add water and sugar and stir.
- Allow the sugar to dissolve. (this will only take a few minutes.)
- Add in roses and stir.
- Allow to simmer on low for about 5 minutes.
- Turn off heat.
- Cover pot and allow to sit for at least 10 minutes.
- Strain out rose solids.
- Allow mixture to cool.
- Transfer to storage jar and refrigerate when not in use.
Recipe Tips
- This recipe does not call for any coloring. I love the all-natural color without any additives. However, if you are looking for a deeper color, you can add 1 drop of pink food coloring after straining the prepared syrup. Or consider using a natural coloring such as adding a hibiscus petal or beetpowder.
- When straining out the rose buds, I strain my syrup from the pot back into the liquid measuring cup. From there I pour the syrup into my storage jar. It makes for a super easy process, and less dishes to wash!
How to Store
Store your homemade rose syrup in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. I store my syrup in a clear glass bottle like this one.
Does Rose Syrup Expire?
Yes, the rose syrup will expire over time. If stored properly, it can last up to 1 month. However, if you see it developed an off-color or smell rancid discard it right away.
How to use Rose Syrup at Home
This simple syrup can be used in so many different ways. I adore it in tea as a sweetener and additional flavor. It is also a wonderful addition to lemonade or a cocktail. However, it can be used for more than just beverages. Try it to flavor baked goods such as cakes or cupcakes, over ice cream, or as a syrup on waffles or pancakes.
Is Rose Syrup Vegan?
Yes, this syrup can be considered vegan.
What does Rose Syrup Taste Like?
Rose syrup tastes sweet with a floral rose flavor. It also smells like sweet roses.
