This tasty treat may be consumed hot or cold, at any time of day, and customized to your liking with freshly brewed tea, foamy milk (or milk alternative), and delicious sweetener in whatever proportion strikes your fancy.
What Kinds of Tea are Used in a Latte?
Almost any type of tea can be used in a tea latte. Some of my favorites include black tea, green tea, matcha, and herbal tea. However, you can use any type of tea that you like. Just make sure to choose a tea that is fresh and flavorful. For your next tea latte, try this easy Thai latte!
Taste
Tea lattes are a delicious and refreshing coffee alternative that can be enjoyed any time of day. A tea latte is a freshly brewed tea topped with steamed foamy milk and is known for its smooth and creamy taste. The milk adds a touch of sweetness while the tea provides a bit of acidity and bitterness that helps to balance out the drink.
The type of tea you use will have a big impact on taste. Black tea has a strong flavor that stands up well to the milk and sweetness. If you are looking for a mellower taste, try using a lighter tea such as green tea or even chamomile which is an herbal caffeine-free tea!
Next, your milk and sweetener selections will also adjust the flavor profile, giving you even more customization to your favorite recipe. In both cases, you’re limited only by your imagination. Common sweetener options include honey, sugar, agave nectar, or stevia. Try your favorite nut milk or whole milk for creamer choices.
Why You Will Love it!
- Easy to Make your own at home!
- Economical
- Delicious
- Perfect start to the day!
- Customizable – Make it with your favorite tea, milk, and sweetener
Three Ingredients
- Tea – You can use any type of tea you like; many options are available. Black tea is usually the number one choice for tea lattes (such as English Breakfast or Earl Grey). If you’re looking for a traditional flavor, black or green teas are a great choice. For something a little sweeter, try using Earl Grey or make chai tea by adding spices. And for a fruity twist, consider using herbal tea.
- Milk – Personally, I chose whole milk because it froths especially well, but if you want a vegan latte, try full-fat oat milk (it is delicious and creamy in this recipe)! Overall, popular choices include whole milk, almond milk, oat milk, and soy milk. I find that whole milk will create a richer drink, while almond milk and soy milk will result in a lighter latte. What is your favorite?
- Sweetener – There are many different types of sweeteners that can be used to make tea lattes. Use any one of them you like for this recipe! Table sugar, brown sugar, simple syrups, honey, agave nectar, and stevia are some of my favorite sweeteners.
How to Steam Milk
If you have a milk steamer, that is great. If not, however, you can use one of these alternative ways to heat your milk to perfection.
- The first way and not the most ideal but will do, is using the microwave. Add your milk to a microwave-safe container and warm for about 30 seconds. Use a thermometer to check the temperature. Your milk should be 150°F. This might take a bit of guesswork up front, but once you find the perfect time you can easily repeat it.
- The second way and more ideal is to heat your milk on the stovetop. It is easier to control the temperature and heat to the exact temperature. Add your milk to a stainless steel pot. Turn your burner on low. Milk can scald quickly so be sure to watch it! Once your milk has reached 150°F it is ready. If you don’t have a thermometer a light simmer is a good indicator that your milk is ready.
How to Froth Milk
There are several simple methods for frothing milk. A perfect latte is topped with a layer of foamy milk.
- Use a handheld wand. Add milk into your container. Lower wand into the milk and turn on the frother. Move the frother up and down and then on an angle to get that fully foamy milk. This only takes about 20 seconds.
- The next option is to use a French Press. Pour milk into your press and use the handle to plunge up and down fairly vigorously to foam milk.
How to Make a Tea Latte
You can make a delicious tea latte in your own kitchen in a matter of minutes. When it comes to making a tea latte, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, you’ll want to choose a high-quality tea. This can be loose-leaf, tea sachets, or tea bags, but make sure it’s a type of tea that you enjoy drinking. Prepare your tea. Strain out the leaves, and stir in your favorite sweetener. Next, you’ll need to steam and froth your milk. You can do this with a handheld frother or by using a French press. Once you’ve steamed and frothed your milk, it’s time to combine it with the tea. Be sure to add the milk slowly so that it doesn’t overpower the taste of the tea. Finally, top off your latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg. And enjoy!
- Start by gathering your ingredients.
- Next prepare your tea. You can do this on the stovetop or in a teapot.
- While your tea is stepping you can prepare your milk. A latte is not complete without being topped with a layer of foamed milk.
- After your tea has finished steeping, strain out your tea leaves, and pour tea into your tea cup. Stir in sugar while it is still hot and will dissolve easily.
- Lastly, top your latte with a thick blanket of milk! Enjoy!
