What is a Taro Latte?

A taro latte is a creamy and comforting hot drink that is made with taro root, milk, and a sweetener. The main ingredients in a taro latte are taro, which provides its unique and earthy flavor, milk for its creamy texture, and a sweetener such as sugar or honey. Taro root has a unique taste and a slightly sweet aftertaste, making it the perfect ingredient to craft a hot taro latte. I also like using taro root vs powder as doing so eliminates any unnecessary chemicals and additives from my latte.

Ingredients

  • Taro Root – This recipe uses real taro root instead of taro powder from a package. You can find taro in most supermarkets. If you don’t have any at your local store, a world market or health food market are great places to look!
  • Jasmine Green Tea – Technically, you can use any tea you like or even leave the tea out altogether, but I love the floral flavor that jasmine green tea adds. Jasmine green tea is green tea flavored with jasmine flowers and the smell alone is simply divine! Look for good quality and organic tea.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk – Using sweetened condensed milk adds an extra creamy element to this tea latte.
  • Milk – For this recipe, I used unsweetened almond milk, but you can use coconut milk, dairy milk, or any other unsweetened milk you like. Choosing unsweetened milk is important to get the right taste for your hot taro tea latte.
  • Coloring – added as desired!

Peel and Chop Taro Root

Begin by peeling the taro and chopping it into cubes. A small to medium-sized root will yield about 1/2 cup. This doesn’t have to be exact.

(Taro root should always be cooked and never eaten raw. Taro skins especially may be toxic and cause an allergic reaction. If this happens to you stop right away and wash your hands and call your doctor.)

Add water to a small pot and add in taro. Cook over low heat until the taro is cooked through. You will be able to easily mash the root with a fork when it is cooked.

Recipe Tips and Substitutions

  • You can make this an iced taro latte by pouring the drink over ice. It is delicious and refreshing! No need to heat your milk for this option.
  • Make it vegan by using plant-based milk such as coconut milk or almond milk.
  • I often use coconut-sweetened condensed milk as a vegan option. It adds more flavor and tastes amazing!
  • You can use food coloring to color your drink or leave it out. You can also use natural colorings such as purple potato powder or beet powder.

Ever wonder what flavor taro is? Taro latte has a unique earthy and sweet flavor that is unlike any other. It is creamy, and slightly sweet.
