Welcome to your new favorite drink – the sweet and comforting Vanilla Milk Tea! This delightful recipe combines the popular flavor of vanilla, black tea, and the creaminess of milk to create a beverage that’s both delicious and comforting. Perfect for a morning pick-me-up or a soothing afternoon retreat, this Vanilla Milk Tea is like a warm embrace. So whether you are a tea connoisseur or just venturing into the world of teas, this Vanilla Milk Tea recipe is an absolute must-try.
What is Vanilla Milk Tea?
Vanilla milk tea combines the familiar flavor of vanilla with black tea and milk. Vanilla has a sweet aroma and creamy taste that makes it perfect for adding flavor to tea or coffee drinks.
What Does Vanilla Milk Tea Taste Like?
Vanilla milk tea has a unique flavor profile that blends together the sturdy taste of black tea, the sweetness of vanilla, and the creaminess of milk. The combination creates an exceptionally flavorful beverage that is both comforting and delicious. The vanilla extract gives the drink a hint of sweetness, while the black tea provides a strong and robust flavor. When combined with milk, these two flavors are balanced by its creamy texture.
Ingredients
- Water
- Black Tea
- 1 Vanilla Bean or 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Bean Paste
- Milk
- Honey or Sugar (adjust to your liking)
How to Make Vanilla Milk Tea
Add The Vanilla: Start by slicing a vanilla bean in half lengthwise. Scrape out the center of the vanilla into a small pot and then toss in the whole bean.
Note: You can also use 1 teaspoon of vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract.
Prepare Tea: Add 1 cup of water to the vanilla and bring the mixture to a boil. Once the water reaches a boil turn off the heat and add the tea bag. Steep the tea covered with a fitted lid for about 5 minutes. Pro Tip: For stronger tea, do not steep longer than 5 minutes. This will only result in bitter tea. Instead, add more tea to your water! After the tea has finished steeping, remove the vanilla bean shell and tea bag or strain out loose-leaf tea. (Pro Tip: if using loose-leaf tea, consider using a tea ball for easy removal of the tea leaves)
Sweeten Your Tea: Now, it’s time to add some sweetness. You can use honey or sugar. I like to start with a teaspoon but you can adjust according to your taste preference.
Add The Milk: Warm and froth milk and pour over tea. See here for details on heating and foaming milk.
Serve: Enjoy warm!
Recipe Notes
- Use either a real vanilla bean, vanilla bean paste, or vanilla extract!
- Not getting that vanilla flavor? You might have a “bad” vanilla bean. This could be due to improper storage or another number of reasons. This has happened to me. To remedy, simply add vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste for that delicious vanilla flavor.
- Try using different types of milk for different flavors and textures. Almond milk will give a slightly nutty flavor, while oat milk will add a smooth, creamy texture.
- If you’d like to add a bit of spice to your Vanilla Milk Tea, consider adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top before serving.
- Remember, the quality of your tea bags matters. Opt for high-quality, black tea for the best results.
- If you’re simply out of vanilla flavoring, you can sweeten with vanilla simple syrup.
- Make this caffeine-free by substituting black tea with rooibos tea!

Courtney says
I agree! I love vanilla flavor especially in the fall and winter seasons!
Ronda says
I can’t wait to try this. Quick question, the vanilla bean paste says it has seeds in it, will they interfere with the texture of the drink? Thanks
Courtney says
No, the seeds will not change the texture of the drink in anyway. I personally like how the seeds add interest to the drink, but it is still a smooth texture with no “pulp.”
